Album of the Moment: 4/28/11

This post is coming atcha...TO THE MAX!

For today we have a short music review of Andrew Rohlk's A Little Less Rough EP, with a link at the end for a FREE download of the EP! Please enjoy, I know I sure did!

A Little Less Rough
EP

1) We'll Be OK: from the very first guitar chords coming in, it's obvious that Andrew Rohlk is a great musician, but that he will be compared to an earlier John Mayer, by some. His voice even sounds like Mayer sometimes. I don't think this is a bad thing. It sucks in the listener who might typically avoid listening to an unsigned artist, then they stay for Andrew, and not the occasional John Mayer similarities. But this song starts off the EP pretty well, with great vocals, some cool back-up vocals, and guitar playing that just seems to have so much soul behind it. Not exactly the kind of song that gets stuck in your head all day (in my opinion), but it's a fantastic way to kick it all off for the listener!

2) Only Friends: the race is close for whether this is my favorite song on the EP or not. Andrew's vocals, as always, are strong and full of emotion. He starts to hit those lovely high notes a bit more frequently in this tune. Imagine the way Bon Iver kind of does it sometimes. It's like that...but juicier. Yes I said "juicier." Andrew's acoustic guitar is a perfect sidekick in this song, helping him tell the story even during the instrumental part near the end, followed by percussion coming in and great back-up vocals to end it all in a kind of echoing climax of music and emotion. Fantastic tune.

3) I'm a Mess: Cheerful guitar strumming, shakers, and lyrics of relationships make this track sound like something I listen to every day in the summer. It might remind some people of The Format's stuff, if you find the need to compare it to something...but I think there's no need to compare. Andrew's stuff is great, this song is a killer tune in his arsenal of songs with his usual spot on vocals that make the heart melt regardless of sex, make you want to keep listening, and make it feel like he's singing about your life with every lyrics. This is the kind of song that might get stuck in your head all day...and I dare you to not bob your head or tap your feet to this song. If you manage that, you're deaf or not human. Great track in the mix of this EP as we hit the finale on a cheery note!

4) What This Will Be: the song begins with some slow guitar playing and Andrew's solid voice hitting some low notes. It begins to pick up the pace, and the strong lyrics continue to suck you in as he starts to bust out some of his high notes. Then, out of left field comes one of the best things about this album: the sing along. One of the best things about an Andrew Rohlk live performance is that despite being a quiet guy, he is an amazing performer that interacts with the audience perfectly. To me this song if perfect for him, for the listener, and for this EP by showing the regular ole listener why they should keep coming back! The song, the beat, the sing along all get stuck in your head and make you hit replay a few times just to hear him hit the low notes at the beginning and his spotless high notes at the end. Amazing way to end the EP.

I loved this EP and I look forward to future shows and future releases from him! Maybe Andrew Rohlk isn't everybody's style of music, but I'm a huge fan and it's time for you to become a fan too by downloading Andrew Rohlk's new EP, A Little Less Rough for FREE here.

I'm just not as good about this as I used to be...and I'm sorry about that! But duty calls and I've been keeping quite busy with work recently! Freelancing has picked up big time and hopefully that will keep up for a while! But hey if you know of any cool 9 to 5-ers out there let me know too!

Make sure you come back tomorrow for a little EP review and so you can get yet another FREE download...this time it's the awesome EP, the newest release from the great Andrew Rohlk!

For today I have a tune from a cool folk band out of Philly. I've always had a soft spot for folk music and I really dig this band and some of their stuff off their self-titled album that was released less than a year ago. I really love this song and I hope you do too. So please enjoy today's jam and don't forget to come back tomorrow for FREE music!

Let's be quick...

I heard this song on a commercial and I just thought "HEY! I know that band!" I loved the song, so I'm doing it now. Check out another song of theirs I used a while back called "Around the Bend." This tune was released by the band off their Fall 2009 album but it still totally rules today with it's sort of soulful pop rock sound. It's pretty unique, if I do say so. Great song by this band of Danes. Please enjoy!

NOTICE: Ashley Johnson and SEBO/Sarah Orem are amazing. Simply put. I love them both so much. Congratulations ladies.

Now, changing subjects to blogging for a moment. Today's Song of the Moment is brought to you by Harrisonburg: Smelling like dogfood on rainy days since 1901. Thanks HBurg.

This tune comes from a band of Swedes who've been around since 99-ish. They just released their 4th album at the end of March and this tune comes from it. It has the same name as the album and has a pretty decent remix of it that I just heard by Kids at the Bar. They released this single at the end of February and I heard it on the radio and loved it...despite what I consider a minor syntax error in the chorus haha. Anyways, here's a great tune coming to you courtesy of HBurg: the dogfood city.

Hello my friends/Jess Lonett. Today's song is being brought to you by: Monday.

This band formed just last year, while the members were together at some sort of study abroad program. They made plans to get together back in the U.S. and throw down some of their music on an EP. Thus, they released their EP and it got great reviews and they've been opening for acts like Florence + the Machine ever since. Tonight they're actually playing a show in D.C. for those of you living there...you should maybe check it out! But here for you now is a tune off their EP...enjoy!

Hello my friends! I was going to bring you this song yesterday, but I had a bunch of work to do, so here it is now! Enjoy!

This tune comes from a band hot out of John Nettles' town of Seattle, WA. They recently played at SXSW after releasing their first album last summer. I'm a big fan of their folksy style with great instrumentals, and I can't wait to investigate more of their songs! I used this song about 2 and a half weeks ago in what my friends and I call The Playlist Challenge. We pick a theme, then we each pick our 5+ songs and email them to each other. It's a great way to keep in touch with friends that you don't see much, a good way to hear new music, and an awesome way to learn more about a person every time! I love doing it, and I loved finding this song and using it right away on the Challenge of Spring. This song really makes me feel like Winter is ending, Spring is coming, and all is right with the world. Great song, great sound, good gravy, good meat, good Lord let's just get to the music already...

I heard this song a few days ago and it reminded me a lot of Passion Pit and MGMT...but a bit more pop-y. So I'm keeping this brief, but I hope you all like this song as much as I do! The replay button never knew what hit it!

This song comes from a New Zealand band who released this song Spring/Summer of last year. Yet, somehow I just heard this song for the first time the other day. Did it get lost overseas or something? What's going on?! Anyways, this song premiered at the #1 spot in New Zealand's Single Chart. It's a great song, I hope you enjoy it. So here it is!
