My Toys 2

A little over 2 months ago I posted about the gear and equipment I had. Well, here is the exact posting with updates made in bold. Enjoy my video nerdness!

"Recently, I've been trying my best to start collecting as much gear as I can. I want to try to have a good amount of decent video, audio, photo, lighting, video/photo editing, and special effects gear. So, here is a fun list I compiled of all my toys in my collection, with hopefully more stuff to come...which I could really use your help/advice on, if you can give any!

Small round lens hood

And, as mentioned before: Garageband, PluralEyes, and Soundtrack Pro
Lame mono handheld mic
Lame lapel mic that I'm not even sure works (definitely doesn't work)

2 recharging stations (1 takes 8 hours the other takes 15 minutes)

Coming soon:
(already added above)
FireWire 400 (in the mail)
Video Hot Shoe L Bracket by Cowboy Studio (in the mail)

With these items, I want to buy them in the near future. I've been doing lots of eBay and Amazon searching, as well as reading customer reports...but I could use some help and recommendations if you've got any:
Camera flash (any suggestions?!)
Light Kit (Trying to keep it standard/simple and as cheap as possible with 2-4 lights. Recommendations?)
Green screen and stand (at least 10x20ft. Not vital, but would be useful! Recommendations?)
Tripod (these 2 tripods aren't great, so I'd like a new one hopefully, but nothing too expensive. Suggestions?)
Decent smoothcam/steadicam rig for DSLRs (I have no clue where to look!)
Battery grip for a longer lasting charge (video drains the batteries big time).
Lav mic (preferably wireless by Shure or Sennheiser)
Rode Videomic shotgun mic"

And that, my friends, are all my toys. If you have any suggestions or advice or questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Hope you enjoyed reading up on my video/audio/editing gear! I hope to keep adding to the collection and getting great gear! Take care my fellow video nerds!

SotM: 3/31/11

After a day of work with a bunch of kids (who weren't bad...it's just exhausting) I just want a big sandwich and my gym shorts. Oh and I also want to sit and watch The Dog Whisperer for an hour. Man, it's an addiction I can't break. But for now, I'll just give you a quick song for the day.

It comes from a fantastic band that won a Grammy this year for best album. Some people disagreed with that Grammy win, but I think it was a close race regardless, but a well deserved win. This song for you today was actually the first single from the album in the UK, but was not the first single in the US. So, short and sweet, just like an Oompa Loompa in the Chocolate River, here is...

SotM: 3/30/11

I know I just posted a song about 12 hours ago, but I've got lots of songs on the list that need to get out there for you all to hear! I've also got a few movies to review too! I've also got a fun story to tell about my weekend filming my very first wedding!
For now though, I'll just give you a little bit of music. Today is Wednesday, and I remember a long time ago I used to give you multiple songs on Wednesday. I called it The Hump Day Combo Meal...

To help you get through "hump day" I've got a present for you. For your listening pleasure I'm going to throw at you the Hump Day Combo Meal. Get ready for greatness, folks.

Today I'm going to be giving you a little bit of hip hop and awesomeness, and yes, both are genres of music. The first song comes from an incredibly talented, yet controversial, artist who put this song out weeks ago and I've loved listening to it. Then, a few weeks ago I watched the video for the first time and my eyes may have melted slightly. You'll understand when you watch it too. Anyways, it features tons of great artists that he has meshed together to make one big old chorus of amazing voices. You can't pick many of them out, I've tried, but it's kind of creative the way he did it. He is a genius...no matter how much you dislike him.
The second song comes from a fantastic singer who I think I prefer solo. He was great about 4 years ago working as a duo with DJ Danger Mouse and cranking out great songs. Now, he's doing his own thing and it's hard to deny that he's making waves. This song I heard recently and then did some research to discover it's going to be his next single, getting released on April 11th! Get ahead of the game and listen now! So, please enjoy this reincarnation of The Hump Day Combo Meal, with a side of hip hop dippin' sauce...

SotM: 3/29/11

Though it is technically the 30th now by 33 minutes, I consider this the 29th because I meant to blog about it on the 29th. Thanks to my friend Jess Lonett, I have a FANTASTIC song for you all. She emailed me about this song, suggesting it for one of my SotM jams, so I quickly wrote it down, then forgot about it. I came back to it a few days later, wasn't sure why I had written that down, listened to the song, loved it, and forgot all about Jess helping me find it. Sorry! Well, credit given now.

This song comes from a band that was formerly known as The Jakes. They won a contest to open for Kings of Leon, had a song of The Real World, and other cool stuff like that. They put out an album in January, released this tune as the first single off the album, and I'm wowed, that's for sure. In 2010 they toured with Minus The Bear (My Time was a past SotM) and Steel Train (fantastic band, I need to blog more of their stuff). This year they played SXSW and have been gaining some recognition and fame for such a "new" indie band. This song comes to you now from Young the Giant, bringing you the...

Um....what? 3

This just might be the BEST Craigslist posting I have ever seen. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.
http://newsfall.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/craigslist_art_257_20080423132047-1.jpg
" I'm a serious bro looking for a equally/more serious bro with fancy footwork. The idea is to tie our wrists together ala the "Beat It" video and then each JO/knife fight in a profound spiritual act of consensual hetero awesomeness. I would have done this way sooner but have little faith in humanity.

Requirements:
-access to an abandoned warehouse
-old enough/built kinda awesome
-maintains good eye contact
-general intensity
-cool moves
-shades
-leather jackets ( I had to give the one in the pic back - long story, I can tell you when we finish)
-Bedazzler
-basic knowledge of knife/sword/bat fight etiquette (I can teach you what I know if you are pretty serious about art like me)
-can lift 80 lbs
-bachelor's in something or equivalent experience
-not a narc

Whereas dudes/J-ing O are both undeniably awesome, I'm a straight bro. As in not gay. I just really love MJ and being open minded about new JO scenarios. We will basically play "Beat It" over and over again while we JO and dance, occasionally parrying/thrusting. Winner finishes the most times, but points will be awarded for finishing first/accuracy. If you're the heter-bro I'm looking for, then we can JO furiously/competitively and then just hang or whatever. I've got laser tag too. I'm pretty serious about this. As in completely serious. If you touch my junk with anything but your own I will BF you in the M. Nerds/gays need not apply. I'M NOT GAY.

P.S. - And I've gotten with hot chicks as recently as just now.

"They told him don't you ever come around here
Don't wanna see your face, you better disappear
The fire's in their eyes and their words are really clear
So beat it, just beat it" "

(this picture was included in the post)

Where oh WHERE to begin with this guy?! He would have posted this sooner but has little faith in humanity? Well, I hope you found yourself a glorious dance partner who restored your faith in many many things.

Your requirements are a bit intense though:
Abandoned warehouse? Just go to New Jersey or Pittsburgh and you should be good to go with that one.
Old enough and built kind of awesome? Well, if you were a true Jacko fan I think you should have written "young enough." Just saying.
Maintains good eye contact? Wait a second...where is this going?
General intensity? During what?!
Cool moves? Are we talking about dancing again, yet?
Shades? I think he only accepts aviators though so he can check out how awesome he looks while pretending to gaze into your eyes.
Leather jackets? Do they have to be red too? And I simply can't WAIT to hear the story behind him selling his last jacket. Oh goody!
Bedazzler? Ok, hold on. Are we really seeking an older guy? This seems like you're hunting for an elementary schooler from the 70's. I'm not so sure this guy is looking for an adult dance partner anymore! Hmmm...
Basic knowledge of knife/sword/bat fight etiquette? I didn't think there was any etiquette. I thought it usually went like this: Hey I'm mad at you, I'm going to smash your face in with this bat. End Scene. I'm pretty sure that's about as much etiquette as you'll find in that sense...and no...there is no artistic ability at all in the realm of knife fighting...unless you're Crocodile Dundee.
Can lift 80 pounds? Ah yes...probably for the Dirty Dancing lift move he plans to do. Hope you're ok placing your hands there to get some good lift on him. And he recently packed on those extra 15 pounds to make it to 80 so he will look more muscular for your JO/knife fight! This guy sounds like a perfect dance partner!
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience? Would it be equivalent experience if I said I use knives to cook? Or I listen to Michael Jackson's music? Or I wear lots of leather and like little boys too?
Not a narc? I didn't know narcs even existed anymore. Pretty sure that was a 90's fad for cops trying to relive the glory days while still managing to be a total douche.

Alright then. Tough requirements to fill. You sound like a mean girl who has incredibly high standards and doesn't understand why she can't find any matches on her online dating site. Maybe it's because you're unrealistic and mean, you heartless wench! (sobs quietly into hands) But then our friend goes on a lovely rant for another paragraph. He REALLY is making a big deal out of defending his sexuality. All I have to say is this: I didn't read a single thing that gave me the impression that you were gay for wanting to JO, tie your wrist to another guys, wear leather, dance, Bedazzle things, and hang out in private with a guy who has a kind of awesome build who will definitely not narc on you. Nope. Nothing gay there. Of course not, especially considering he told us all he got with a hot chick just now. Wow. She sounds like a keeper! She got with you just now while you were typing up this incredibly homoerotic Craigslist post seeking another dude with intense eye contact?! Lucky guy. Hold on to her. You know what...better yet, because you seem to insist you're a true man...just tell her to Beat It.

Um....what?

I'm keeping this post as simple as humanly possible. People post ridiculous stuff on Craigslist. Some you can find in the Best of Craigslist section. Some you just stumble upon on your own. I plan to blog a few of these so please enjoy this one I literally just found on my own.

Please be ready to give me your best Wayne line over the phone, I don't have time to schedule appointments to interview everyone.

Thanks,

Awesome. Simply awesome. Good luck, Mike! I hope your search ends well, my friend. Until then, I recommend you start drinking purple drank and begin working on your own Weezy impressions because the market is pretty small on that front, man.

SotM: 3/24/11

Recently, my friend Jithu mentioned a song by this great band. While this isn't the song she mentioned, it's still pretty dang good.
I realized that I have, until now, only used one of their songs as a Song of the Moment tune. I can't believe I hadn't done this song in the past, but here it is now anyways. The first song I used by this band has probably been the most popular song I have ever used as a SotM. Except, it was used back in August, which was in the pre-blogging age.
Alabama, Arkansas, this song rules so don't guffaw (yes I said "guffaw").
Now, today's Song of the Moment by the same band is another great jam and I hope you all enjoy it!

Vids for the Kids: 3/23/11

For only the second time...I will be reviewing a full-length feature film. I will promise to do my best to not give away any important plot points of the movie in this review. But, I will still be touching on the basic plot and what I thought of it all. If you don't want it to be ruined at all...stop reading. Here for you now, on today's Vids for the Kids, I present:

The King's Speech

http://www.flicksandbits.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/the-kings-speech-poster-2.jpg

A few weeks ago I finally saw this movie. This is a film based on historical events, so technically I'm not really giving anything away...I'm simply teaching World History 202 right now. Yet, I think that most people today, myself included, knew NOTHING of this man and his life. To us, World War II means Hitler, FDR, Stalin, Mussolini, and from England we have Churchill. Royal family? What do they even do anymore? Well, in all honesty, not a ton, yet this film shows you how important they still are. The royal family is a symbol, an example, someone to look to, so they may not be the governing body anymore but they are still incredibly important in their own right.

So, The King's Speech begins with a man, Albert Frederick Arthur George (which I previously shortened to "A.F.A.G." but thought better of it), The Duke of York, preparing to give a speech. Fitting. He is a member of the Royal Family and it is obvious he lacks the ability to speak in public.

He isn't king. He is The Duke of York, his father is king and his older brother is prince as well and heir to the throne. The tale of how Albert, The Duke of York actually becomes king is incredibly interesting, it is the only time in the history of England that it happened in that manner, and I won't give it away. So, through whatever way it happens, he becomes King of England and is no longer Albert...he becomes known as King George VI. The story of George VI is a great one considering that he reigned during the height of World War II, chose to remain in London despite bombings, food rations, boarded up windows on the PALACE, and limited water supply that was always cold...even for the king. He even narrowly escaped death a time or two when bombs were dropped on Buckingham Palace while the King and Queen were there. His wife, the Queen, even defiantly commented "I am glad we have been bombed. We can now look the East End in the face" because they could now see the East End of London. George VI became close personal friends with Winston Churchill during the war, despite George initially not thinking Churchill to be the best pick for Prime Minister, and the Royal Family also became incredibly close with FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt. Think about that trio of men for a minute. King George VI with his speech impediment, FDR in his wheelchair, and Churchill with his speech impediment as well that most people did not know about because he was such a grand speaker. Churchill memorized every speech he ever gave, even choreographing pauses and pretended fumblings as if he was searching for the right phrase. He has a distracting lisp that made him the butt of many jokes, so his way around it was to memorize his "impromptu speeches." F. E. Smith once said, "Winston has spent the best years of his life writing impromptu speeches." So, there's your trio of men who were supposed to be protecting the world and their countries from the Axis Powers. Yet, 2 of them can barely speak properly and 1 can barely even walk. But despite all of that, they were all 3 incredible leaders.

Watching The King's Speech, knowing a little more about Albert/King George VI before I went in, made me sympathize with him much quicker. King George has a terrible stutter and finds it practically impossible to make public speeches, something which is becoming more necessary now considering the invention and prominence of the radio. His father is a marvelous speaker and his brother bullies him for his stammer. People can truly be so cruel sometimes. My brother stutters to this day, I occasionally do too because it's kind of ingrained into my speech because I remember hearing him talk like that and thinking that if my older brother did it, it must be cool. I used to have a lisp and eventually went to speech classes to get rid of it. I can't imagine being a grown man with a stutter who is literally forced to give public speeches. To me, after watching the intro to the movie and just seeing how George struggles to get a few words out, my heart ached and my muscles tensed up all over simply trying to give him some ability to speak. That was the very first sign I had that this was going to be a fantastic movie. 2 minutes in and I was already sympathizing with the main character so much that it hurt to see him struggle. The rest of the movie is incredibly interesting, but for sake of not giving away too much I'll summarize it like this: He tries to give a speech, but can't. He tries to get rid of his stutter with many doctors, but can't. His wife finds a professional who tries to help, but Albert sees no improvement and leaves. Eventually he realizes the improvements he was actually making right away, and then begins the movie's story of how Albert/King George VI began to conquer his stutter with the help of his wife, a specialist named Lionel Logue, and some support. There are many more side plot lines that happen in the film, but I won't go into those. Just know that they are all great and you should just see the movie if you haven't already.

Colin Firth's acting as Albert/George VI was incredible, believable, and talented. He played a man who had an incredible position of power, yet was so weak, sensitive, embarrassed, angry, proud, loving, and everything else in between. He WAS the King. Firth's acting was fantastic, as was Helena Bonham Carter's acting as Albert's wife. She usually plays the crazy woman, like in Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland and any cooky bat-sh*t-crazy woman in a Tim Burton film. Yet, this time she took on the role of British royalty and nailed it. She marries into the Royal Family and shows that in her characterization by being a bit rough around the edges yet still prim and proper in many ways. Then, Captain Barbossa steps in, with Geoffrey Rush taking off the eye patch and playing the Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. He plays the role amazingly as he plays the perfect combination of unorthodox and crazy (which provides a hilarious scene with Firth swearing to loosen up), yet professional and invested in his new patient and friend. I can see how Colin Firth won the Oscar for Best Actor, and I am sure it was a close race for the supporting roles for Bonham Carter and Rush, and I am not surprised at all that it won Best Picture. I wish they could have an award for most random appearance...which would definitely go to my good friend Wormtail aka Timothy Spall as he played Churchill....that was just weird.
And lastly, the small touches, such as real video and audio of King George VI speaking really made the movie hit harder and made it seem more real. I felt as though I wasn't watching a movie, but instead a close inside look behind the scenes at Albert's life as if I were just an observer, laying back and watching.

You simply need to go see this movie if you haven't already. It is fantastic. It is a great story of family, friends, love, being a father, conquering your fears, the beginnings of war, and so much more. The life of Prince Albert, later King George VI, is an incredible tale and a story that I feel was simply aching to be told in this way. Now stop reading a go see it.

The King's Speech gets a 9.5 out of 10 stars from me

(with the only deduction being that Timothy Spall was a strange choice for Winston Churchill)

SotM: 3/22/11

Just the other day I had a song on here by The New Pornographers...great band, great song. Well, this tune comes to you now from a founding member of that band. He did/does some solo stuff every once in a while and you can definitely hear a New Pornographers sound and style to it, which is probably why I like it so much. So, this song comes to you now from his 2009 album, Get Guilty, and I love this track and hope you all do too!

It's been a long day so I don't feel like trying too hard to please anybody with this post....except for this: look at the moon tonight. IT'S HUGE. And bright...well, as bright as the moon can be, I guess.

Anyways, today's Song of the Moment comes from a band that I have actually used 3 songs from for previous SotM tunes. This 4th one is great, but I'm not sure it's up to par with the other 3 songs I've used in the past (In One Ear, Back Against A Wall, No Rest for the Wicked). Yet, I'll admit it's still an awesome song in its own way! I love it! So, please enjoy today's jam, sponsored by...

Here for you today is something for your listening and viewing pleasure. A band by the name of The New Pornographers came out with a fantastic album in May 2010 called Together. I've used 2 songs from this album as past Song of the Moment tunes and this one will be #3. So far I've used Moves and Your Hands (Together) and with this song added to it, I will have used the first 3 songs off the album. If you haven't heard the 2 songs I've used previously...you really should...look them up. So, here for you now, is a FANTASTIC tune by The New Pornographers off their most recent album's second track and it has a strangely simple and entertaining video for it too...so check it out...

It's 3/11 and today's song will not be a 311 song. Sorry, but that's too predictable. Instead, it comes from a tune that I just heard tonight as part of the music in a documentary I watched. It was all about this crazy mountain climber and the music was just perfect for it. PERFECT. Such a great film festival and a great documentary. So, for you now, I've got a good tune by Radical Face...who I've never heard of before. Oh well! Here it is!

SotM: 3/7/11

I've been digging this song lately and playing it several times a day. It's just catchy. It just feels like a personal anthem. You can find some sort of connection to this song in some way, I think. So, instead of keeping it to myself and the other million people who have heard it, I'll share it with you now!

It comes from a great band that is a side project of Jack White, of The White Stripes. While The White Stripes are sort of on a break of undetermined length, it's still considered a "side project." I've used one of their songs in the past as a Song of the Moment if you want to check it out! It's called Old Enough and it comes from their 2008 album Consolers of the Lonely. But this song was released in the US in 2006 off their first album and I just love it. Apparently, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the song as the 2nd best song of the year...right behind Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. Well, sorry guys, but nobody remembers any song from 2006 EXCEPT Crazy. Maybe that's why I just heard the song for the first time a year or so ago. Oh well, better late than never, I always say! This video is goofy, with them racing soapbox cars and it has a guest appearance from Pee Wee Herman. There's other versions if you just want the audio, and no goofy intro...just YouTube it. So here for you now is The Raconteurs bringing out...

Erin,

Ok everybody, here's today's Song of the Moment...coming atcha a little late in the day...but don't get mad...because if I hear you got mad I'm gonna punch you right in the kidneys.

Here for you now is a track from a fantastic band with only 1 album out. I've actually somehow only used 1 of their songs in the past...weird. This one does NOT come off their first album which came out in 2009 and rocketed them into the spotlight. This one unfortunately comes from the soundtrack of a terrible vampire movie whose name I will not say because it does not deserve to be mentioned. Though, that album features great music and even a few old SotM tunes such as Cee Lo Green's What Part of Forever (both songs were only used in the credits though. Phew). This song was released in November as a single to promote the re-release of their stellar debut album and I got hooked. The track I've got for you now comes from the always amazing Florence + The Machine and I hope you enjoy...

Album of the Moment: 3/3/11

G'morning my friends. I have a special treat for y'all today. It is another Song(s) of the Moment special: Album of the Moment and a slight spin-off of "My Awesome Friends." Except, I'd say this might be better titled "My Talented Friends." Here for you now, we have the amazing Casey Cavanagh Band's new EP (which you can download for free with a link at the end)!

"I Miss Bayberry, Sitting On the Porch..."?

On January 14th, 2011 the band released a brand new EP to the world at Harrisonburg's Clementine Cafe. I, sadly, was not in attendance. Yet, I downloaded the Bayberry EP right away and listed to it. Just because Casey is a friend of mine, doesn't mean I'm going to say what I'm getting ready to say. Ok? Ok. The Bayberry EP is fantastic. I listened to it for days straight. On my computer, my iPod, in my car as I drove, and even once as some tunes to fall asleep to.

I am a big fan of the way the EP starts with a bang with Coming Home, as Casey's unique vocals and the catchy beats and chorus that makes you want to sing along, suck you in. After that point, you're hooked.
The Becoming
catches your interest as you hear an acoustic-electric duet and some different vocals coming in from Sam (later Casey) that are just perfect for the song (check the great harmonizing in the chorus by the way).
Your Love
, the 3rd track, slows it down a little for you with some great acoustic picking, some simple drumming, a little piano, and Casey's versatile voice almost morphs into exactly what it needs to be for this track.
Find You
ends the EP with a nice build up to the song that I wished hit a little harder as the build up ended. To me it needed a POP between intro and song, but that's personal preference. Casey and John mix their vocals on this last song, which has a bit more of a rock feel to it, which I'm not sure how I feel about it still. I think the band is fantastic in their usual alternative and kind of americana/folk style. This song is different, not bad, but I prefer some of their other songs to this one. I must admit that I love the way it ends though. I think it's creative with the echoing voices fading out with some synth that reminds me a lot of Coldplay actually. It's not the most emphatic way to end the Bayberry EP, but I definitely dig it!

So...out of the 4 songs, they are all good and offer their own great moments, while some definitely get stuck in your head more than others. The Casey Cavanagh Band did a great job with this EP and I think there is much more to come from these guys, even as their college years draw to an end. I think my biggest problem with the EP though is this: WHY ONLY 4 SONGS?! Gah! It just made me want more! And in my opinion, that means they did a great job if I can't help but replay the album several times a day. Fantastic EP.

SotM: 3/1/11

March's first Song of the Moment comes from a new album that came out in the middle of January. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to listen to much of it...but what I've heard so far is fantastic. I started loving these guys back in late high school after I first heard "July July" off their 2002 album and then freshman year in college when they released their amazing album, The Crane Wife. So, if you've been missing some of that amazingness by The Decemberists, you should check out their new album...or just listen to...
