Vids for the Kids: 5/31/11

Not too long ago this awesome kid was revealed to me. His YouTube channel is strange. Yet, the best stuff that he does, in my opinion, is his dancing. He goes into Apple Stores, gets on a computer and uses the built in camera to record himself as he plays a song loudly and rocks out to it in the middle of the store. It's epic. You have to see it for yourself. My 2 favorites are Friday and Whip My Hair. Below is his Friday video. Everyone loves some Rebecca Black, right? If you really don't like that song, just click the link and find another of his Apple Store videos to watch! Now enjoy one of my favorite discoveries, on YouTube, in months!

Here's another tune that's a great cover from a new artist who released his album on the 10th. Enjoy jam #7...even though it apparently appeared in a crappy Ashton Kutcher movie...oh and it's not work appropriate.

Big Meadow Sessions // Lights in the Fog

I love music. I love video. I wanted to find a fun way to combine these 2 loves other than trying to create the typical music videos you see on TV...or at least used to see on TV. I mentioned it to a few friends who have some of the same passions, they started talking, and together we came up with a great idea.
That idea is the Big Meadow Sessions.

Big Meadow Sessions started in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, where we all met each other. "Shenandoah" is the Iroquois word for "Big Meadow" so the name is a perfect way to tell some about us while giving tribute to an amazing place. Big Meadow Sessions has now created the first video in what we intend to be a series of videos. Please enjoy the video and the music.

In April, I got together with my good friend Jess, and we met up with a band. This fantastic band of amazing people play mostly out of Harrisonburg, Virginia and have a solid fan base all over Virginia and the east coast. Lights in the Fog has Shivani's vocals making your spine tingle, Jorge's smooth bass, Eric's heart pounding drums, and Chris with his fingers flying on the guitar. All 4 are great musicians who mesh well together and have been playing and creating music for a while, and that night they played acoustic for us. Jess and I met early, got the gear, and did some audio and video tests with the band before we got rolling. It was a great night to be outside, a great time filming with them, and a great video that we've been able to make. Enjoy the first video of Big Meadow Sessions. (YouTube)

SotM: 5/9/11

This is another one of those dark march sounding kind of songs that appeals to me for some strange reason. The best I can tell you is that it just has the sound that makes me want to keep listening. It sucks me in and I don't know why! So I hope you all dig it like I do, too.

This track was the first single off this UK/US collab. band's 2011 album. This track came out the very end of January and the album came out in April. Its gotten lots of good reviews, yet a pretty average 6.4 out of 10 from Pitchfork. Hmmm. Regardless, I think this track rules and I hope you like it too! Enjoy!

Crazy Greek

Many Richmonders think I'm crazy for having gone this long without it...but I just hadn't heard of it before, ok?! Get off my back. The Crazy Greek is a restaurant staple in Richmond.

When I went to school in Harrisonburg, there was a "Greek" restaurant that had an awesome rooftop and cheap drinks and decent food. I wouldn't really call them Greek though just because they made a pretty good gyro.

After eating at The Crazy Greek, I think that restaurant in Harrisonburg is a joke compared to it. I've now eaten at The Crazy Greek twice: the first time with Sean, getting a gyro with fries, and the second time with my lovely girlfriend, getting pastichio/patitsio and a Greek beer. The gyro was delicious with fresh green crunchy lettuce, a juicy tomato slice, juicy lamb, and some of the best tzatziki sauce I've had. Yet, the pastichio is what really blew me away. It is essentially Greek lasagna, and it is good at The Crazy Greek. The noodles at the bottom were delicious and cooked perfectly. The beef was fantastic and was definitely cooked in some special kind of sauce that I couldn't place, but it was spectacular. The top layer was a fantastic creamy sauce that was binding it all together as a perfect meal. I finished my meal, was absolutely stuffed, yet considered ordering another just to take it home. Yet, to polish it off and wash it all down, I took the last few swigs of the amazing Alpha beer that I ordered.

So, overall The Crazy Greek has a delicious menu, catering to Italian and Greek specialties for us picky Americans, serves a good selection of beers, and has a good environment (despite one REALLY awkward waiter). While I'd say it definitely isn't the most Greek restaurant you can find, it definitely serves up some amazing food. They know what they're good at, and they're good at food over at The Crazy Greek. So, any time you're in Richmond, I strongly recommend you hit them up. Enjoy!

PS: Good luck finding their official website. It doesn't seem to exist.

SotM: 5/1/11

Caps play tonight. Game 2 versus the Tampa Bay Lightning with Tampa leading the series 1-0. Let's Go Caps! Let's Go Caps! LET'S GO CAPS!! I want to see a win!

Thinking about the game made me remember the kinds of songs I used to listen to before big volleyball games to get pumped. It ranged from The Mars Volta to The Format to 50 Cent. Weird mix I know. Recently I heard this song, and though it's crazy weird, I think it's the kind of song I'd use now to get hype. It comes from a guy's solo project and it has a kind of dark and ominous feel to the slow steady beat and raspy vocals. I dig it. I hope you all do too. Here for y'all now is May's first Song of the Moment, brought to you by the NHL. Thanks for the endorsement.
